Gorilla trekking at a glance
Around 1,063 mountain gorillas remain in the wild, split across Uganda, Rwanda, and DR Congo. Permits cost $800 in Uganda (Bwindi & Mgahinga), $1,500 in Rwanda (Volcanoes NP), and $400 in DR Congo (Virunga NP). The best trekking months are June–September and December–February (dry seasons). Each trek lasts 1–6 hours depending on the gorilla family location, with groups capped at 8 visitors for a 1-hour observation window. Uganda offers the best value; Rwanda the most convenient access (2 hours from Kigali); Congo the lowest price but with security advisories.
